Special Projects

Welcome Back, Mustangs!

We hope you had a restful and fun-filled summer! As we kick off another exciting school year, we want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support, especially through your Annual Fund Donations. Thanks to your generosity, the PTSO has been hard at work on a special project to enhance our beautiful campus.

As you may know, Myers Park sits on 60 acres! At the heart of our campus is the quad, a central gathering space where students transition between classes and enjoy lunch outdoors. Over the years, changes like new buildings, sidewalks, and the loss of mature trees have significantly impacted stormwater drainage in this area. These changes led to flooding and erosion problems that we could no longer ignore.

With the help of Seth Martin, a Myers Park parent and surveyor with Forrest Geomatics, we conducted a professional survey of the quad. The results confirmed what many of us had observed — the existing drainage system was no longer adequate.

To address this, we’re taking a multi-phase approach. While we work on long-term solutions and plan to present our findings to CMS and the City of Charlotte, we’ve also taken immediate steps to mitigate the issue.

Thanks to a collaboration between Roman Garcia, owner of Garcia Lawn Services, Mr. Folk, and the PTSO, we developed a landscaping plan focused on reducing erosion and improving water absorption. This included:

  • Installing several new catch basins to collect and redirect stormwater
  • Adding rocks to areas where grass will not grow to prevent soil erosion and drain blockages
  • Creating a more sustainable and visually appealing space for students to enjoy

We’re hopeful that these improvements will not only reduce flooding during storms but also enhance the overall look and function of the quad, making it a better place for our students to gather and enjoy.

Thank you again for your continued support. Projects like this are only possible because of you!
